"Former editor Keith Ball wanted to build an old-style chopper, and that's where I got the concept for this illustration. He wanted a single downtube frame, but with many new modifications," David recounted. The eventual bike looks markedly different from Dave's draft, but its essence remains unchanged. The final version became a bike known as "Dicey Knuckle". The center spread seen here was featured a few years earlier. The draft ideas page that David incorporated into the painting sewed the seeds for what would eventually become an extremely rigid-framed, belt driven, dual-carbed configuration. What works so well about this illustration are the dimensions of the creation tools themselves the paper, pencil and paintbrush rise off the page   in a manner predicting a similar rise to life of the bike's design. Every goal needs a plan any bike that begins with a Mann drawing is alive before its wheels ever touch the ground.
